SuperTuxKart's gameplay is similar to the Mario Kart series, but also has distinct elements, such as collecting and using cans of Nitro. The game features the mascots of several open source projects.

SuperTuxKart's gameplay is a cross between Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing (Nintendo 64). Overtime it became more distinctive and made a name of its own. The characters are open-source mascots and each game is refereed by Mozilla Thunderbird's mascot. The game can be played in single player, local multiplayer and networked multiplayer (since version 0.9.2).
