Warzone 2100 is an open-source real-time strategy (RTS) and real-time tactics (RTT) hybrid computer game. It was originally released in 1999 for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation, and is now also available for macOS, FreeBSD, AmigaOS 4, AROS, MorphOS, Linux, NetBSD and OpenBSD.
Warzone 2100 is a fully 3D game. It uses the iVis 3D graphics engine developed by Sam Kerbeck of Eidos Interactive Ltd. Being fully 3D means that vehicle tilt to meet hilly terrain and projectiles can be clocked by steep mountains. The camera is free to move around the grid based game, it can be rotated, zoomed in/out and pan up/down while navigating the battlefield.
Units are divided into 5 factions which are represented in different colors:
Units will gain experience as they fight in the game. They will go from Rookie to Trained to Professional. Their chassis, drive system and mounted object can also be customized to allow better maneuverability and performance.
Sensors and radar are key elements to detect units and to coordinate ground attacks. Warzone 2100 put emphasis on artillery, although various direct-combat, close-combat and anti-air weapons can be researched and deployed.
Some missions must be accomplished within a set amount of time whilst others can be used to gather "power" in which you can take more traditional RTS tactics to gain victory.
